Natural gas is one of the most important energy sources in the modern world. It heats homes, powers industries, and generates electricity. But before natural gas can be delivered to consumers, it must be moved through pipelines across vast distances. This is where the natural gas compressor becomes essential.
At its most basic level, a natural gas compressor is a machine that increases the pressure of natural gas, making it easier to transport and store. As gas travels through pipelines, it loses pressure due to friction against the pipe walls. Without compression, the gas would eventually stop flowing altogether. Compressors are placed at regular intervals along pipeline networks to “boost” the pressure and keep the gas moving efficiently.
The Working Principle
A natural gas compressor operates by drawing in gas at low pressure, compressing it to a smaller volume, and then releasing it at a significantly higher pressure. This is typically achieved through one of two fundamental methods: positive displacement or dynamic compression.
Positive Displacement Compressors are the most common type for natural gas applications. These compressors work by trapping a fixed volume of gas in a chamber and then reducing that chamber’s volume to increase pressure. The reciprocating compressor is the most widely used positive displacement design for natural gas. It uses a piston moving back and forth inside a cylinder. As the piston moves downward, it draws gas into the cylinder through an intake valve. When the piston moves upward, it compresses the gas, and the compressed gas is discharged through an outlet valve. This cycle repeats continuously, creating a steady flow of compressed gas.
Dynamic Compressors, such as centrifugal compressors, use high-speed rotating impellers to accelerate the gas and convert that velocity into pressure. While these are sometimes used in very high-flow applications, reciprocating compressors remain the preferred choice for many natural gas operations due to their ability to achieve high discharge pressures and handle varying inlet conditions.
Why Compression Matters
Compression serves several critical functions in the natural gas industry:
- Pipeline Transportation: Compressors maintain the pressure needed to push gas through long-distance transmission pipelines.
- Gas Lift: In oil production, compressed natural gas is injected into wells to help lift oil to the surface.
- Storage: Compressed gas can be stored in underground caverns or above-ground vessels for later use.
- Vehicle Fuel: Natural gas must be compressed to high pressures (typically 200-250 bar) for use as a fuel in vehicles.
Selecting the Right Natural Gas Compressor
Choosing the right natural gas compressor for a specific application requires careful consideration of several factors. These include the required flow rate, the discharge pressure needed, the composition of the gas, and the operating environment. Reciprocating compressors are generally used in applications with smaller displacement and higher discharge pressure requirements. They offer excellent efficiency and reliability when properly specified and maintained.
